What to ask a dermatologist, and what to bring

Four questions do most of the work: what do you think this is, what are the options, how will we know if it is working and by when, and what should I do if it gets worse. Bring one page rather than a folder, and write your most important question at the top so you do not leave without asking it.

In short

The answer

The short answer

Most skin appointments are short. What you get out of one depends less on how much you say and more on what you have decided to ask before you walk in.

Four questions cover most of it:

Everything below is detail on those, what to take with you, and a sheet you can print.

Why these four

They map onto the four things an appointment can actually settle.

What it is. Worth asking directly, along with how confident that assessment is and what would change it. Skin conditions overlap, some look alike, and some coexist, so "probably" is a normal and honest answer.

The options. Including the option of doing nothing for now, and what the realistic aim is. Fewer episodes, faster recovery and clearer skin are different goals with different plans.

How you will both know. This is the question people skip, and it is the one that makes your tracking useful afterwards. A timeframe and something concrete to watch for turns "keep going and see" into something you can check.

What to do if it gets worse. Ask what "worse" means in your case, and who to contact. This is the question that prevents a bad week becoming a long wait.

The other questions, if there is time

Ask these in the order that matters to you, not the order they appear here.

What to bring

What to say in the first minute

Say the thing you actually came about, at the start.

The concern underneath an appointment often surfaces in the final thirty seconds, if at all. Whether it will scar, whether it is permanent, what it is doing to your sleep, how you feel about being seen, whether it is affecting your work. All of that is legitimate to raise, and raising it early means there is time to answer it.

If time runs out

Appointments end sooner than expected, and that is not a reflection of how serious your condition is.

Before you leave, it is reasonable to ask for the plan to be written down or added to your notes, to check when you will next be seen, and to ask who to contact in the meantime. If a question did not get answered, say so plainly and ask how to get an answer rather than leaving with it unanswered.

The sheet

Print this, fill in the top half before you go, and use the bottom half in the room.

If you already keep a daily record, print your summary for the last few months and staple it behind this sheet. The sheet says what you want from the appointment; the summary shows what has actually been happening.

Where this comes from

This guide is general information about preparing for an appointment. It is not medical advice, it does not diagnose or treat anything, and it is not a substitute for seeing a clinician. Always speak to a healthcare professional about anything meaningful, and never start, stop or change a treatment based on something you have read here.

Questions

Questions people ask

What questions should I ask a dermatologist?

The four that change the most are: what do you think this is, what are the options including doing nothing, how will we know if this is working and by when, and what should I do if it gets worse before I see you again. If there is time, ask what would make you consider referral or a different approach.

What should I bring to a skin appointment?

A one-page summary, a list of everything you currently use on your skin or take by mouth, and three or four dated photographs taken when it was at its worst. Bring the products themselves or photographs of the labels if you can, because ingredients matter more than brand names.

How many photos should I bring?

Three or four is plenty. The useful ones are taken on a bad day, in the same light and from roughly the same distance, with the date recorded. Fifty photographs cannot be looked through in a ten-minute appointment.

What if I forget my questions in the room?

Very common, and it is why the sheet below has one box at the top for the question that matters most. Reading a question off a page is completely normal and most clinicians would rather you did.

Can I print a summary from a symptom tracking app?

Many apps can export one, and it is worth checking before you go. Moya exports a summary for a date range you choose, covering how many days you logged, how many were flare days, your sleep, and the notes you wrote at the time. A printed summary is easier to hand over and read in a short appointment than a phone screen.

Should I write down what is said during the appointment?

It helps. Recall after a medical appointment is often incomplete, and the parts people forget most are the plan and the timeframe. Writing down what was agreed, by when you should notice a difference, and who to contact if things change takes a moment and saves a follow-up.
